Black Beach

Address: MN-61, Silver Bay, MN 55614

Black Beach at Silver Bay

When I first stepped onto Black Beach, I felt like I’d entered another world. The black sand, which comes from taconite tailings left over from mining operations, gives the beach a surreal and striking appearance. The contrast of the dark sand with the blue-green water and the lush forest surrounding it was absolutely stunning.

This beach has a calm and peaceful vibe, making it ideal for families or anyone seeking a relaxing day by the water. I loved walking along the unique shoreline and snapping photos of the dramatic scenery. There are also picnic areas nearby, which made it the perfect spot to stop and enjoy a packed lunch while soaking in the views.

Highlights:

  • Unique black sand that creates dramatic scenery.
  • Calm waters, great for kids and families.
  • Picnic areas for a quiet, scenic meal.

Park Point Beach on Lake Superior Ariel View of the beach that is a long beach that is lined with trees and water on both side of the beach and a road between the two bodies of water.
Park Point Beach

Park Point Beach in Duluth is one of the liveliest spots I visited on Lake Superior. It’s a long, sandy beach with a fun, social atmosphere. Families, couples, and groups of friends were all enjoying the sunny day when I was there, playing beach volleyball, swimming, or just lounging on the sand.

The beach’s proximity to Duluth’s downtown is a big plus—it’s easy to grab a coffee or a quick snack and bring it back to the beach. I also enjoyed taking a long walk along the shoreline; the endless stretch of sand makes it feel like the ocean, even though it’s a lake.

Highlights:

  • Vibrant, social vibe with plenty of activities.
  • Close to Duluth’s downtown amenities.
  • Perfect for beach volleyball and long walks.

Presque Isle Park Beaches

Presque Isle Park Beaches

Presque Isle Park is a nature lover’s dream. The beaches here are small and rugged, surrounded by rocky outcroppings and lush forest. What I loved most about this area was the variety—it’s not just about the beaches, but also the hiking trails and breathtaking viewpoints.

I spent the day exploring the park, hopping from one little beach to another, and hiking through the forested trails. Each beach felt like a hidden gem, offering its own charm and unique perspective of Lake Superior. This spot is perfect for anyone who loves combining outdoor adventures with beach time.

Highlights:

  • Rugged, natural beaches with rocky outcroppings.
  • Hiking trails with stunning viewpoints.
  • A perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Little Presque Isle Beach felt like a secret escape. It’s a peaceful and quiet spot where you can truly unwind. The sand is soft, the water is crystal clear, and the towering pine trees create a serene atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization.

What made this beach extra special for me was the small island just offshore, which you can reach by wading through shallow water. Exploring the island was a mini-adventure in itself. This beach is ideal for anyone seeking tranquility and a connection to nature.

  • Tranquil, secluded atmosphere.
  • A small island to explore nearby.

Grand Marais Beach

Address: Hwy 61, Grand Marais, MN 55604

Stones with lots of colors that line the beach in Grand Marais, MN at Agate Beach.
Pebbles at the beach at Grand Marais Beach

There are a few popular beaches in Grand Marais that combine natural beauty with small-town charm. Grand Marais Beach is a pebble beach that has lots of agates (type of quartz) that have some really cool rocks with lots of colors in them. They are really smooth and lots of people come just to go rock hunting. It is framed by rugged cliffs and a quaint harbor, giving it a unique and cozy vibe. I got lost relaxing while looking at stones hearing the waves gently wash ashore. There are also areas that are just sand, but I enjoyed my day amongst the smooth stones, as well did many others as the places was busy with others doing the same.

The town of Grand Marais is just steps away from the beach, so I wandered into local shops and enjoyed a meal at a waterfront restaurant after spending time by the lake. The mix of natural beauty and cultural charm made this beach unforgettable.

Highlights:

  • Unique pebble shoreline surrounded by cliffs.
  • Close to the charming town of Grand Marais.
  • A perfect blend of nature and local culture.

Pebble Beach

Address: Hwy 61, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, MN 55616

Pebble Beach at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park was the hidden gem of the summer with a very peaceful and meditative vibe, and probably my favorite experience on the lake. The smooth, colorful pebbles create a unique shoreline that’s perfect for skipping stones or simply sitting and enjoying the peaceful sounds of the waves.

The iconic Split Rock Lighthouse in the background adds to the magic of this spot. After relaxing on the beach, I hiked the trails in the park to get a closer look at the lighthouse and take in panoramic views of Lake Superior. This beach is a must-visit for anyone who loves history and serene natural beauty.

Tip:
Bring a couple thick blankets instead of a beach towel to lay on so that you have some extra padding. Although the pebbles are smooth, you would not be comfortable lying on them for hours.

Highlights:

  • Quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
  • Unique pebble shoreline with great views.
  • Close to Split Rock Lighthouse and hiking trails.

Burlington Bay Beach

Address: Two Harbors, MN 55616

Burlington Bay Beach is one of my favorite spots I visited with my dog. Located near the town of Two Harbors, this sandy beach has a calm and friendly atmosphere. The water here is very shallow, making it a great place for families with young kids to play and swim. I had my dog with me, and he was in heaven splashing and laying in the shallow waters all day.

I also appreciated how close the beach is to local amenities. After a morning on the sand, I headed into Two Harbors for lunch at a charming café. The beach’s convenience and welcoming vibe make it a great option for anyone looking for a relaxing day on Lake Superior.

Highlights:

  • Family-friendly with shallow waters.
  • Close to Two Harbors’ shops and restaurants.
  • Great for a laid-back beach day.

Sand Point Beach

Sand Point Beach near Munising is a sandy, family-friendly spot with clear water and stunning views of Lake Superior. It’s located close to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which means the scenery here is nothing short of spectacular.

I loved how soft and inviting the sand was—perfect for lounging or building sandcastles. The water was refreshing and surprisingly clear, making it great for swimming. After spending time on the beach, I explored nearby hiking trails and enjoyed a picnic with unbeatable views. This was probably my favorite spot for relaxation, and swimming as there were very few people there when I visited. The waters were crystal clear and couldn't have had a better experience.
